Disclaimer

Independence Behavioral Coaching provides parents and teachers with behavioral tools designed to help them increase their effectiveness and happiness. It is not designed to deal with children who have psychological disorders or medical conditions, and the strategies it suggests will not work for all types of children at all stages of development. Various factors may affect whether the tools are effective with a particular child, including the child’s age and developmental level, the child’s setting/environment, and the parent and/or teacher’s skill in applying the program.

Children who exhibit signs of dangerous behavior, to either themselves or others, should be placed under the care of a qualified professional.

Independence Behavioral Coaching is not intended to take the place of professional therapy, counseling or medical treatment. Children currently under the supervision of a professional should not discontinue such care without the consent of this professional. These tools are not intended as a substitute for medication, and you should never discontinue a child’s medication without consulting a qualified professional.

What is behavioral coaching?

In order to better understand what behavioral coaching is, we must first identify where it came from.  Behavioral coaching has its origins in psychology in the philosophical work by William James and later grew through the humanistic approaches of Abraham Maslow and Carl Rodgers.  Their work paved the way for the study of optimal human functioning from which Maslow coined the term, “positive psychology” (Maslow, 1954).

What is positive psychology?

Positive psychology is the study of strengths and talents that lead to optimal human functioning.

Today, positive psychologists like Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi have called for a shift in focus of both research and application of how strengths and talents can be amplified in order to create a more fulfilling life.

Behavioral coaching brings the principles of positive psychology directly into the home and/or school where the child lives.

Behavioral coaching is a highly customized support service for children that focuses on guiding positive growth.

Independence Behavioral Coaching (IBC) believes that the best way to coach a child is through the supportive people around them.

IBC coaches and trainers encourage parents and teachers to shift their thinking from one where the focus is on changing behavior to one focused on:

-       Increased awareness

-       Listening to the message

-       Celebrating talents

-       Practicing the positive

Maslow, Abraham (1954). Motivation and Personality. New York: Harper and Row

Behavioral Assessment

The Behavioral Assessment includes a minimum of two 1-hour visits focused on increasing awareness of the referred difficult behavior(s), discovering and celebrating talents, and making recommendations of environmental changes and behavioral support techniques.  The Behavioral Assessment includes a detailed recommendation report and a comprehensive package of behavioral growth tools that the family can use for years to come.

Behavioral Coaching

Behavioral Coaching is a 1-hour visit focused on role-playing and practicing recommended behavioral support techniques as well as celebrating talents and supportive environmental changes.

*It is always best to begin with a Behavioral Assessment in order to maximize awareness and to have on-going access to a wide variety of behavioral growth tools.  Without the Behavioral Assessment, initial Behavioral Coaching visits will require additional time for information gathering.  If needed, your assigned Behavioral Coach can set up a series of Behavioral Coaching sessions that include a gradual Assessment.

Childcare/Schools Behavioral Training/Workshops

A variety of 2-hour trainings and 4-hour workshops are available that are designed to provide practical, easy-to-use, talent centered behavior management tools.

Training costs depend on the length of the training selected.  Additional discounts are available for purchases of more than one training or workshop that can be provided throughout the school year.

What is Behavioral Coaching and How Can it Help You?

Behavioral coaching comes from an emerging new mental health support profession called behavioral consultation.  Behavioral consultation in the field of mental health services is a new phenomenon which is to date both ill defined and misunderstood.  Behavioral consultants hold a variety of different job titles and offer a variety of different services.  Whether you are called a Behavioral Specialist, Behavioral Health Technician or Behavioral Coach, a common element of the behavioral consultant is the collaborative relationship focused on positive behavioral growth.

Independence Behavioral Coaching (IBC) chose the title “behavioral coach” to emphasize the need for parent and teacher support and guidance to help them help their children.

IBC believes that the key component to supporting children is through supporting and strengthening the relationships between child and adult so as to better allow the adult coach the child in ways that can best set them up for success.

Our relationships to one another provide the foundation for all behavioral growth.  Growing research is showing that building strong secure relationships can help with over 80% of behavior problems and with the 20% of children that need more, building relationships can minimize the need for additional support services like counseling and medication.

The key to effective behavioral coaching lies in creating opportunities for relationship development.  Caregivers in general, whether they are parents, relatives, foster parents or even teachers sometimes need extra support and guidance in relationship development.
