Attention and Hyperactivity Problems"

Does your child get fidgety, restless or can’t sit still?

Does your child ever appear bored or easily distracted?

Does your child get upset when things are out of place or don’t go as planned?

Is your oppositional or argumentative?

Attention problems and hyperactive behavior are one of the biggest complaints of teachers today.  Whether or not your child has a diagnosis of ADHD or just has some of the symptoms and is struggling in school or at home…

…WE CAN HELP!!!

What is ADHD?

Causes:

The causes of Attention Deficient and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) remain unclear.  Research continues to find evidence linking it to genetic, parental, environmental and physical factors.

Symptoms:

-       Inattention

-       Difficulty focusing on tasks and at play

-       Difficulty organizing for tasks and/or activities

-       Forgetful and looses things

Impulsivity:

-       Difficulty thinking before acting or talking

-       Quick to interrupt others

-       Struggles to wait for his or her turn.

Hyperactivity:

-       Child is constantly active

-       S/he is often found fidgeting, wiggling and taping when expected to sit or stand still.

A child may not show all of the symptoms.  For example, the child may have difficulty with attention and being impulsive but not be hyperactive.

What’s normal?

Normal attention control development:

Children are not able to focus their attention until at least the age of two.  From there, normal attention control varies from child to child but on average develops as follows:

-       Two to three years is about 5 to 7 minutes

-       Three to four years is about 7 – 9 minutes

-       Four to five years is about 9 – 13 minutes

-       Five to six years is about 13 – 15 minutes

Screening for attention and/or hyperactive problems:

-       Can the child use words to express his or her needs?

-       Does s/he seem to understand directions?

-       How does s/he play with other children?

-       Does s/he wander aimlessly around the room when not directly involved with an adult or an activity?

-       When does the behavior occur (transitions, free choice, group time)

-       What behaviors make the child seem different from other children the same age?

How can you help?

Children with attention and hyperactive problems quickly fall into a negative attention cycle from both teacher and their peers.  As this negative cycle continues, these children end up seeing themselves as outcasts.

Statements such as “everyone hates me” and “I think I would be better off dead” become commonplace.

Behavioral coaching focuses on:

-       strengthening broken relationships

-       addressing unmet needs

-       increasing self-esteem by celebrating talents

-       and using positive discipline to teach appropriate behaviors
