Oppositional Defiant Behavior"

Tired of constant defiance and back talking?

Feel like you are walking on eggshells, always giving in to your child?

We can help you teach your child learn how to manage their need to challenge and control others!

Let’s first take a closer look at oppositional and defiant behavior and the diagnosis of ODD.

Oppositional and defiant behaviors begin as a normal part of childhood development; however, children with ODD exhibit a consistent pattern of these behaviors into early adolescence.  Symptoms of ODD can include:

-       Frequent temper tantrums

-       Intentionally irritating others

-       Excessive questioning of rules and arguing with adults

-       Blaming others for their mistakes or misbehavior

-       Refusing to comply with adult requests

-       Bragging about being mean and openly seeking revenge

-       Provoking conflict between peers, family members and other adults

Children with ODD can be exhausting.  It is important to remember that these children have deficits that lead to frustration.  It remains unclear why children develop ODD behaviors but there is strong evidence that suggests that some of these deficits come from coexisting disorders such as:

-       Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

-       Learning Disabilities

-       Mood Disorders (depression & Bipolar)

-       Anxiety Disorders

-       Conduct Disorders

A child presenting with ODD like symptoms needs a comprehensive evaluation by a psychiatrist or other qualified mental health professional.  Although medication is usually not used to treat ODD, it may be helpful to manage symptoms of other coexisting disorders that are frustrating the child.

ODD and Behavioral Coaching

It is important to remember that some traditionally effective behavioral coaching techniques may not work with ODD children.  Misbehavior and the reactions from their peers and adults can easily become rewarding and thus difficult to change.
